Leather Mask Options
Traditional Mask (Dark Brown) - The standard axe mas ships with the Almike from Hults Bruk. It is built with a quality leather from the Swedish Tärnsjö tannery. While the material quality is solid, one might consider the function of this traditional design to be "clunky" when it comes to removing or applying the axe mask. The security of the mask staying on the axe is also lesser since it only uses pressure of the lanyard to hold it on. This mask is held together with brass press rivets.
Craft and Lore Mask (Waxed Natural Veg) - We approached the design of our mask with 3 main concerns. Form (how it looks), Function and Security. We find the axe to be a beautiful tool (see our logo!) and an axe mask should match or accentuate the beauty. The function of easy removal and application is also a must for us. Less time fiddling with the mask, and more time working! We're using a solid brass button stud to secure the retention strap, making sure that the mask stays put to protect you and the axe both. For the materials we're using one of our favorite extremely high grade natural vegetable tanned leathers. It's a sturdy 8oz thick, and we've beefed it up with a hot stuffing of pure beeswax. The beeswax penetrating all layers of the leather will help it resist the elements, as well as add a sturdy firm hand to the leather. It also gives it a unique color characteristic called "pullup" allowing the wax to shift within the leather as it is stressed. Expect a beautiful patina and darkening of this leather as it ages from use and exposure.
