Shell Cordovan, Chromexcel, Dublin, Essex — each has its own character, and each rewards proper care in its own way.
Here's everything you need to know about caring for Horween leather.
What Makes Horween Leather Different?
Horween leathers are tanned using traditional methods that take weeks or months, not days. The hides are stuffed with natural oils, waxes, and tallows during the tanning process, which gives them their characteristic richness, depth, and durability right out of the tannery.
This means Horween leather is already well-conditioned when it arrives — but it still benefits from regular care, especially with heavy daily use.
Horween Chromexcel
Chromexcel is Horween's most popular leather and a favorite for wallets, boots, and bags. It's a combination-tanned leather stuffed with a proprietary blend of oils, greases, and waxes.
Key characteristic: Pull-up effect. When you scratch or press Chromexcel, the oils shift and the area lightens. Rub it with your finger and the oils redistribute, often making the mark disappear.
Care routine:
- Wipe with a dry cloth regularly to remove surface dust
- Condition every 3–6 months with a light conditioner or beeswax balm
- Avoid heavy oils like neatsfoot oil — Chromexcel is already oil-rich and doesn't need aggressive conditioning
- For scratches, use the fingertip method: rub firmly with your finger pad to redistribute the oils
Horween Shell Cordovan
Shell Cordovan is the crown jewel of Horween's lineup. It's not actually leather in the traditional sense — it's the fibrous flat muscle (the "shell") from the hindquarters of a horse. It's incredibly dense, non-porous, and develops one of the most spectacular patinas of any material.
Key characteristic: Shell Cordovan doesn't crease like regular leather — it rolls. The fibers are so dense that it resists moisture and abrasion exceptionally well.
Care routine:
- Use a horsehair brush to buff regularly — this is the primary maintenance tool for Shell Cordovan
- Condition sparingly with a dedicated cordovan cream (like Saphir Cordovan Cream) or a very light application of Leather Honey
- Avoid heavy waxes and oils — Shell Cordovan's dense surface doesn't absorb them well and they can leave a sticky residue
- For scuffs, buff with a horsehair brush or a soft cloth. Most marks disappear with buffing alone
Horween Dublin
Dublin is a pull-up leather with a matte, waxy finish that develops a beautiful patina with use. It's slightly more casual than Chromexcel and has a distinctive dry, matte hand feel.
Care routine:
- Condition with a beeswax balm or Leather Honey every 3–6 months
- Dublin responds well to buffing with a soft cloth, which brings up a subtle sheen
- Water spots are common on Dublin — if your piece gets wet, let it dry naturally and then condition
General Rules for All Horween Leathers
- Less is more with conditioning. Horween leathers are already oil-rich. Over-conditioning can make them greasy and over-soft.
- Avoid heat. Never dry Horween leather with a hair dryer or near a radiator. Let it air dry naturally.
- Embrace the patina. Horween leathers are designed to age. Marks, color changes, and character are features, not flaws.
- Store properly. Keep in a dust bag away from direct sunlight when not in use.
