Before anything else, you need to know your watch's lug width — the distance between the lugs (the protruding parts of the case where the strap attaches). This is measured in millimeters and is the most important spec when buying a strap.
Common lug widths: 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, 21mm, 22mm. Most watches fall in the 18–22mm range. Check your watch's specifications or measure with a ruler.

Vegetable-Tanned Leather
The most traditional choice for watch straps. Vegetable-tanned leather starts firm and breaks in over time, developing a beautiful patina shaped by your wrist. It's the best choice if you want a strap that becomes more personal with wear.

Horween Chromexcel
Chromexcel is softer and more supple from day one than vegetable-tanned leather. It's comfortable immediately and develops a rich, complex patina with the pull-up effect characteristic of Horween leather. It's also more resistant to moisture than veg-tan leather.
Best for: Everyday wear, field watches, and those who want comfort from day one.
Horween Shell Cordovan
The premium choice for watch straps. Shell Cordovan is incredibly dense and durable, develops a spectacular mirror-like patina over time, and has a distinctive rolled texture rather than creasing. It's the choice of serious watch enthusiasts who want the best.
Best for: Dress watches, special occasion wear, and those who want the finest possible strap.
Suede / Roughout
Suede and roughout leather straps have a casual, textured appearance that works well with field watches, pilot watches, and casual dress watches. They're softer and more casual than smooth leather but don't develop as dramatic a patina.
Best for: Casual and field watches, relaxed dress codes.
Strap Styles
Standard Straight Strap
The most common style. Both ends of the strap are the same width. Simple, versatile, and works with most watches.
Tapered Strap
The strap is wider at the lug end and tapers to a narrower width at the buckle. More elegant and traditional, especially for dress watches.
NATO / Zulu Style
A single-piece strap that threads through the spring bars. More casual and sporty, with a distinctive look. Not traditional leather, but available in leather-look materials.
Buckle vs. Deployant Clasp
Standard buckles are traditional, easy to adjust, and simple to replace. Deployant clasps (folding clasps) are more secure, reduce wear on the strap by always opening and closing at the same point, and feel more premium. For everyday wear, a deployant clasp is worth the investment.
Caring for Your Leather Watch Strap
Leather watch straps are exposed to sweat, which is mildly acidic and can break down leather over time. Wipe your strap with a dry cloth after workouts or hot days. Condition every 2–3 months with a light leather conditioner. Rotate between two straps if possible to give each one time to dry and recover.
