If you carry leather every day — a wallet, a belt, a watch strap, or a bag — you're already investing in something that can last decades. But leather is a natural material, and like anything natural, it needs a little attention to perform at its best.
This guide is for the EDC enthusiast who wants their gear to age beautifully, not just survive. Here's everything you need to know about leather care, distilled into practical, actionable advice.
Not all leather is the same, and care routines vary by type:
Surface dirt and oils from your hands accumulate over time. A quick wipe with a dry cloth every week or two prevents buildup. For deeper cleaning, use a barely damp cloth with a small amount of saddle soap every few months.
Conditioning is the most important thing you can do for leather. It replaces the natural oils that evaporate over time, keeping the fibers supple and preventing cracking. For EDC items, condition every 3–6 months. Use a quality conditioner like Leather Honey, a beeswax balm, or a product specifically designed for your leather type.
Leather and water have a complicated relationship. A little moisture is fine — in fact, rain on a well-conditioned wallet usually beads right off. But prolonged soaking can warp leather and cause water stains. If your leather gets soaked, let it dry naturally at room temperature, then condition it once dry.
Sunlight is another enemy. UV exposure fades and dries out leather over time. Store your leather goods away from direct sunlight when not in use.
Wallets: Carry them in your front pocket when possible. Back-pocket carry creates heat and pressure that can warp the leather and accelerate wear on the stitching. Don't overstuff — a slim wallet carries better and maintains its shape longer.
Belts: Rotate between two belts if you can. This gives each one time to recover its shape between wears. Condition your belt every 3–4 months, paying extra attention to the holes and buckle area.
Watch straps: Leather watch straps are exposed to sweat, which is mildly acidic and can break down leather over time. Wipe your strap down with a dry cloth after workouts or hot days. Condition every 2–3 months.
Bags and briefcases: These take the most abuse. Clean the handles and bottom corners (the highest-wear areas) more frequently. Condition the entire bag every 3 months.
The EDC community understands something that most people don't: the best gear isn't the newest gear. It's the gear that's been broken in, worn in, and cared for. A leather wallet that's been properly maintained for five years is more beautiful — and more personal — than anything you could buy new.
That's the philosophy behind everything we make at Craft and Lore. Browse our leather wallets, belts, and watch straps — built for the long haul.
